Diabetes is a disease that causes an overload of blood sugar or “glucose.” Such an overload of glucose in your blood can harm your eyes, kidneys, and nerves. It can even cause heart disease or stroke, or damage circulation so badly that amputation is required.
Cells “burn” glucose to generate energy. And insulin is the hormone that enables the glucose to be absorbed into the cells. With type 1 diabetes, the body does not make enough insulin. With type 2 diabetes, which is the type most people have, the body does not manufacture insulin. In either case, the result is the same: too much glucose circulating in the blood.
